Joseph Gallagher was born in Achill Sound, Co. Mayo and lived and enlisted at Greenock. Serving with the 6th Battalion Connaught Rangers, he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery but was killed in action, France/Flanders on 11 August 1917, aged 28 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. He was the son of John Gallagher of Achill Island, Co. Mayo and husband of Margaret Gallagher of Lower Abbey, Gate Street, Galway, Ireland.
