South Wales Borderers, a fine quality post-1902 officer’s Home Service blue cloth helmet, complete with spike and chin chain, a standard pattern KC gilt and silver plate with black velvet centre (congealed) and usual gilt metal fittings, internal leather sweatband and remains of silk fringe, named inside ‘Capt Gwynne SWB 1902’; accompanied by the original carrying tin by Caters and with brass plate ‘Capt. D.Gwynne Sth Wales Borderers’; also a spare spike (fractured), the helmet skull in excellent condition with only very slight traces of surface moth, the plate with most gilt intact, the other fittings rubbed, the tin with surface rusting and dented at the front £400-500

David Charles Sackville Gwynne, Captain 3rd Militia Battalion 12.3.1901, Major 3rd Battn 27.9.1914, then transferred to the Special Reserve, as such in November 1918. Saw previous service in the South African War 1899-1900, the operations in the Orange River Colony and in Cape Colony, north of the Orange River.
