Sir James Dunlop Baronet, entered the Coldstream Guards as a Ensign and Lieutenant by purchase on 27 April 1849 and was promoted Lieutenant and Captain on 14 July 1854. Serving in the Crimean War, he was present at the battles of Alma, Balaklava and Inkermann and the siege of Sebastopol. For his services he was awarded the Queen’s medal with four clasps, the Sultan’s medal and the Sardinian Medal for Valour in silver, and was awarded the Brevet of Major on 2 November 1855.
