‘The Frank Henderson Medal’, obv. Royal Naval badge, rev. inscribed, ‘the Frank Henderson Medal, May 1920’, 20mm., 9ct. gold, hallmarks for Birmingham 1919, extremely fine £60-80

Possibly associated with Vice-Admiral Frank Hannam Henderson, Royal Navy (1850-1918). Henderson was specially promoted to Lieutenant for the capture of the slave dhow Jasmine off the coast of Arabia in 1872. was awarded the R.H.S. Bronze Medal for a successful rescue in 1883. Served in the Ashantee Campaign 1873-74, Egypt and Sudan Campaigns of 1882-89 and was senior officer on the west coast of Africa at the outbreak of the Sierra Leone Rebellion of 1898-99; for his services in the latter campaign he was awarded the C.M.G. in 1900. During the Great War he was Admiral in charge of Atlantic Convoys during 1917-18. Awarded the D.S.O. for his war services, he died before he could receive it, worn out by his strenuous wartime duties. Sold with a quantity of copied research on Vice-Admiral Henderson.
