M.B.E. London Gazette 1 January 1967. A lengthy recommendation states: ‘Lieutenant Lewis’s services to the Welsh Guards have been of a very high order for many years. His ability, devotion to duty, hardwork and complete reliability have enabled him to undertake commitments of a very varied and complex nature, calling in many instances for an extremely high degree of tact and discretion. In 1961 he was appointed Superintending Clerk at Regimental Headquarters ... he was directly concerned with the organisation of several elaborate and successful recruiting drives ...His work as General Secretary of the Welsh Guards Association has again been an outstanding success. ... In the first half of 1965 and the proceeding months he was deeply involved in all aspects of the planning of the 50th Anniversary Celebrations of the Regiment which included four major ceremonial parades, three dinners, each attended by upwards of 400 people, three dances, each attended by more than 600 people and three church services at each of which more than 400 people were present. He more than any other person, had to deal with the multitudinous details connected with each... Also recently, a complete reorganisation of the Regimental Funds of an extremely complex nature has been made. Since the Regimental accounts were maintained by him as Superintending Clerk, this reorganisation has meant a very large additional load which he has borne with complete equanimity... Lieutenant Lewis has played a leading part in the Regiment’s sporting and social activities and has worked tirelessly in promoting the success and expansion of the Welsh Guards Association.... Since 1965, when he was granted a Combatant Commission, he has been employed as Unit Families Officer of the Regiment ... It is considered that both as a Warrant Officer and a Commissioned Officer he has ... given most exceptionally good service for which an award in the 52nd year of the Regiments existence would be particularly deserved and appropriate’.
