Alexander Slater, an Assistant Engineer for the Travancore Government, was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in December 1914, and, via the Southern Provinces Mounted Rifles, joined the 106th Hazara Pioneers (‘Probably the best shooting regiment in the Indian Army’) as a Lieutenant from the Indian Army Reserve of Officers in December 1915. He remained similarly employed until 1918-19, a period that witnessed his advancement to Captain in December 1918 and transferral, as a Company Officer, to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Pioneers (The Kelat-i-Ghilzie Regiment). He was present in the Baluchistan operations of June to July 1915.
