James Horn was born in Barony, Lanarkshire and living in Falkirk, enlisted at Barony in 1897 and served in the Boer War. He entered the France/Flanders theatre of war with the 2nd Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders on 11 September 1914 and was killed in action at Le Maisnil, France, in the battle of Armentieres, on 21 October 1914, aged 40 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial. He was the son of the late Mr & Mrs Henry Horn of Etna Foundry, Falkirk.
