Alfred Hawkins was born in the Parish of Flempton, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk. A milkman by occupation, he enlisted into the Corps of Hussars of the Line on 8 November 1898, having previously served in the 3rd Battalion East Kent Militia. Posted to the 13th Hussars, he served in the Boer War, 31 January 1900-20 October 1902. He was severely wounded on 15 May 1901 whilst serving in Lieutenant-Colonel Colville’s Column. Recovering from the bullet wounds to his left forearm and abdomen, further overseas service followed, serving in India, September 1904-January 1906. Private Hawkins was discharged as medically unfit on 7 July 1906; he died on 10 April 1948. Sold with copied service papers and confirmation of clasps.
