John Kinahan was born at Feakle, Ireland, on 13 February 1837, and was appointed Assistant Surgeon on the Medical Staff on 5 August 1858. He served variously with the 44th Foot and the Royal Artillery, before returning to the Staff in May 1866. He became Surgeon Major in April 1873, and served in the Egyptian War of 1882 (Medal, and Khedive’s Star). He also served in the Nile Expedition of 1884-85 in charge of Field Hospitals at Simneh and Sarkamatts (Clasp). He went on retired pay with the honorary rank of Brigade Surgeon in June 1885, and died at Southsea on 30 September 1897.
