Francis Alfred Turton was born at Demerara on 6 Jume 1836, and qualified for his medical degree at Heidelberg. He was appointed Assistant Surgeon on the Medical Staff on 13 October 1858, and was subsequently attached to the 23rd Foot in July 1860 and to the Royal Artillery in April 1865. He became Surgeon Major in June 1873 and took part in the Ashantee Expedition of 1873-74, serving as Sanitory Officer from 17 December 1873. He volunteered and was present at the capture and destruction of Adubiassie, capture of Borborassie, battle of Amoaful, advance guard engagements of the 2nd and 3rd February, battle of Ordahsu, and capture of Coomassie (several times mentioned in despatches, medal with clasp). During the Second Afghan War he served with the Kandahar Field Force in the first campaign (Medal). He died on 30 April 1889.
