Henry George Sutton was born on 26 May 1860. Entering the British Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1879, he transferred to the Madras Army in 1881. At the time of his services in Burma 1885-89, he acted as Quartermaster of the 27th Madras Native Infantry. He received promotions to Captain in August 1890, Major in June 1899 and Lieutenant-Colonel in June 1904, commanding a number of regiments and in February 1908 was given the Brevet of Colonel. By mid-1909 he ceased to be employed, however with the onset of the Great War his services were again required. He entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 15 May 1915 and served there until 31 August, serving with the 3rd Battalion Manchester Regiment. In January 1916, after service with the London Regiment, he assumed command of the 21st Battalion Rifle Brigade and departed for Egypt that same month. There he and unit served in the Egypt Expeditionary Force, 19 March 1916 - 18 September 1918. For his wartime services he received a mention in despatches. Sold with copied research including a quantity of 21st Battalion Rifle Brigade War Diary copies for the period June-December 1917.
