George Richard Hill was born at Eastleigh, Hampshire in February 1904 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 1st Class in September 1921. Among other inter-war seagoing appointments, he served in the aircraft carriers H.M.S. Courageous and H.M.S. Argus. Hill was awarded his L.S. & G.C Medal while serving aboard the cruiser Enterprise.
