Richard Stanley Knott was born in Surmane, Africa and living on the Isle of Wight, enlisted at Woldingham. Serving with the 16th Battalion Middlesex Regiment he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 17 November 1915. He was killed in action at the ‘Hawthorn Redoubt’ on 1 July 1916 - the first day of the battle of the Somme. He was buried in Auchonvillers Military Cemetery. He was the son of Alfred George and Sarah Elizabeth Knott of Mountfield, High Park, Ryde, Isle of Wight.

Frederick Thomas Fincher was born in Piccadilly and lived and enlisted at Teddington. Serving with the 2nd Battalion Royal Fusiliers he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 19 January 1915. He was killed in action at the ‘Hawthorn Crater’, Beaumont Hamel on 1 July 1916 - the first day of the battle of the Somme. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. He was the son of Mr Wi. Fincher of Gomer Gardens, Teddington, Middlesex.
