Afghanistan 1878-80, 2 clasps, Charasia, Kabul (Surgeon J. G. Hancock, 5th Punjab Cavy.) nearly extremely fine £350-400

John Gatchell Hancock was born on 5 February 1853, and educated at King’s College, London, and in Paris. He qualified as M.R.C.S. in 1875 and M.B. Lond. in 1876, being appointed Surgeon on 31 March 1877. He served in medical charge of the 5th Punjab Cavalry throughout both campaigns in Afghanistan, being present at the actions of Matan and Charasia, and the operations round Kabul and defence of Sherpur in December 1879 (Medal with two clasps). He retired in September 1890, and died at Taunton on 25 June 1893.
