Afghanistan 1878-80, no clasp (Surgn. Maj. G. Ashton, A.M. Dept.) fitted with silver ribbon buckle, good very fine £200-250

Gough Ashton was born at Doneraile, Co. Cork, on 1 September 1839. He was appointed Assistant Surgeon on the Medical Staff on 1 October 1862, and to the 102nd Foot in November 1863. He returned to the Staff in December 1867 and was appointed to the 56th Foot in May 1870. He was promoted to Surgeon Major in April 1876 and served during the war in Afghanistan in 1878-80 (Medal). He retired in February 1887, and died at Oxmanstown Mall, Birr, on 20 January 1905.
