George Morris Blyth was appointed Assistant Paymaster on 7 October 1852. He served in the Britannia (flag) in the Black Sea in 1854, and took part in the siege of Sebastopol and attack on the sea defences on 17 October (Crimean and Turkish Medals, Sebastopol clasp); served also in the Hawk in the Baltic fleet of 1855 (Baltic Medal); and was Paymaster of the Himalaya in the Ashantee expedition of 1873-74 (Medal). He was promoted to Fleet Paymaster in February 1886 and retired as Paymaster-in-Chief on 3 September 1886.
