Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 1 clasp, Central India (Ast. Surgn. T. Lowe, Madras Saprs. & Miners) light contact marks, otherwise good very fine £400-450

Thomas Lowe was born in 1828 and qualified at Birmingham as M.R.C.S. in 1850 and L.S.A. in 1851. He was appointed Assistant Surgeon on the Madras Medical Establishment on 24 January 1855. He served with ‘B’ Company Sappers and Miners in the Persian Expeditionary Force under Major-General Sir J. Outram, K.C.B., from March to May 1857; present at the bombardment and capture of the fort and town of Mohamrah on 25th March 1857, and in the subsequent pursuit of the enemy on 26th March 1857 (Medal with clasp).

He next served with the Deccan, Nerbudda and Malwa Field Forces under Major-General Woodburne, C.B. and Brigadier C. Stuart from June to December 1857, and with the Central India Field Force under Major-General Sir H. Rose, K.C.B. from December 1857 to May 1858. He was present at the suppression of the mutiny at Aurungabad on 7th July 1857; the relief of Asseerghur 22nd July 1857; the relief of Mhow 2nd August 1857; the siege of Dhar from 22nd to 30th October 1857; the actions before Mundisore 21st to 24th November 1857; the re-entry of British Troops into Indore December 1857; the siege of Ratghur from 25th to 29th January 1858; the relief of Saugor 3rd February 1858; the capture of the fort of Gurracotta from 11th to 13th February 1858; the capture of the fort of Baroda 1st March 1858; the battle of Madempore 3rd March 1858; the siege of Jhansi from 21st March to 3rd April 1858, and on the latter date afforded medical aid to the storming party on the night attack; the battle of Betwa 1st April 1858; the battle of Goulalee 21st May 1858; and the capture of Calpee 23rd May 1858 (Medal with clasp).

Lowe became Surgeon in January 1867, Surgeon Major in July 1873, and died at Bangalore on 30 April 1874. He was the author of
Central India during the Rebellion in 1857-58, published in 1860.
