India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Pegu (Ast. Surgn. C. Stewart, M.D. 1st Eur. Bengal Fusrs.) fitted with silver pin brooch, good very fine £250-300

Charles Stewart was born on 30 October 1821, and qualified M.A. M.D. Ed. in 1843. He was appointed Assistant Surgeon on 26 Febrary 1851, and served with the 1st European Bengal Fusiliers at the relief of Pegu and the subsequent operations in the Field under General Godwin; was attached to the advanced Guard of General Steel’s Column from Martaban to Shwegyeen (Medal). He served in Medical Charge of Major Gottreuz’s Force at the assault and re-capture of Beeling, and of Major Selon’s Detachment in the expedition to Womgyee. He also served under Major Nuthall in the operations against the rebel Chief Goungyee. He was appointed Surgeon on 20 December 1863, and died at Jhansi on 6 August 1864.
