Military General Service 1793-1814, 8 clasps, Ciudad Rodrigo, Badajoz, Salamanca, Vittoria, Pyrenees, Nivelle, Orthes, Toulouse (J. Groves, 40th Foot) solder repair to carriage between first two clasps, edge bruising, otherwise very fine £1400-1600

Joseph Groves was born in the Parish of Stokelane, near Bath, in the county of Somerset, and attested for the 40th Foot at Bath on 24 April 1809, at the age of 15 years. He ‘served in the Peninsula during the campaigns of 1811, 1812, and 1813, and South of France in 1814; in America three months, in France two years, New South Wales and Van Diemens Land five years, East Indies five years two hundred and five days. Was wounded in the right arm at Badajoz and in the left leg at Salamanca.’ Joseph Groves was finally discharged at Horse Guards on 7 July 1835, in consequence of intense functional disorder and probably structural disease of the liver. He was still living in September 1874 and claiming a pension of 1s 6d per day from the supervisor of pensions at Taunton. Sold with copy discharge papers.
