Military General Service 1793-1814, 4 clasps, Vittoria, St. Sebastian, Nivelle, Nive (W. McNall, Serjt. 59th Foot) edge bruising and surface marks, otherwise very fine £800-1000

William McNall was born at Middlegate, York, circa 1795, and enlisted into the 59th Foot at Leeds on 8 January 1810. He served with the 2nd Battalion at the battle of Vittoria, the siege and assault of St Sebastian, where he was wounded in the right arm, and at the battles of Nivelle and Nive. He was present at the battle of Waterloo, as a drummer in Captain Pilkington’s company, and was one of those rescued from the wreck of the Seahorse in January 1816, when the regiment lost half its strength. At the time of his discharge on 28 February 1832, he had served as a Drummer for 7 years 296 days, a Corporal 4 years 301 days, and a Sergeant 6 years 169 days. He died at Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 4 March 1864.
