Williams Banks was born at West Hartlepool on 9 May 1883 and educated at Darlington Grammar School. He enlisted as A/10062 Private at the Inns of Court O.T.C. on 2 December 1915 and was commissioned as a Temporary 2nd Lieutenant in the Durham Light Infantry on 30 May 1917. Posted to the 14th Battalion on 21 July 1917 and the 11th Battalion on 1 March 1918, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 1 August 1917. He was posted missing on 24 March 1918. It was later reported by the International Red Cross that he had died of wounds (gun shot wound to the head) as a prisoner of war on 6 April 1918 at Reserve Field Lazarette, Ham. Originally buried at the British Military Cemetery, Ham, he was later re-buried in the Roye New British Cemetery, Somme, France. He was the husband of Elizabeth Banks of 118 Salisbury Terrace, Darlington.
