Hedley Stewart was born on 19 June 1889, son of tea merchant, James Reid and Eleanor Stewart of Park House, Durham, and was educated at Durham School. He enlisted as 2256/265336 Private in the 6th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers in September 1914 but was discharged to a commission in March the following year. Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 7th Battalion Durham Light Infantry on 5 March 1915, he served in France/Flanders from 19 April to 3 May 1915, when he was wounded by a rifle bullet in the left shoulder near Zillabeke whilst laying sandbags in a trench on 30 April. Returning to the theatre of war, January - 14 September 1916, he was wounded by a shell fragment on 8 September. Returning yet again to France, January - 14 November 1917, he was wounded in the right arm by a bomb dropped by an enemy aircraft, at Elverdinge on 31 October. Post-war he was employed with the Royal Insurance Company, Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Sold with copied research.
