Joseph Henry Chaplin was born in Warrington, Lancashire on 6 September 1866. He enlisted as a Drummer in the 106th Regiment on 24 January 1881 and transferred to the 1st Battalion Durham Light Infantry the following year. He was transferred to the 3rd (Militia) Battalion D.L.I. as an Instructor in April 1897 and was promoted Colour-Serjeant in April 1899, serving with them in the Boer War. Recommended for the M.S.M. in 1903, he was discharged in May 1908. He served in the 8th Battalion D.L.I., 1908-12. Chaplin re-enlisted as 18/381 Private in the 18th Battalion D.L.I. on 19 September 1914, being appointed Colour-Serjeant and Acting Serjeant-Major that same day. The following month he was promoted to Serjeant-Major. In June 1915 he was commissioned as Temporary Lieutenant and Quartermaster in the 18th Battalion D.L.I. Chaplin served in Egypt, December 1915-March 1916 and France/Flanders, March 1916-April 1917. Transferred to the General List and posted the Depot, The Black Watch in August 1917, he was appointed Temporary Captain and Quartermaster in June 1918. He relinquished his commission, retaining his rank, on completion of service on 10 April 1919. Sold with copied service details.
