‘My dear Mr Brookes, Please do’nt trouble to return my maps etc: will you do me the honour to accept them as a New Years Gift? I shall never look at them again [?] I never wish to hear of the beastly Country again, I am just begining to get its smells out of my nostrils & its taints out of my stomach .... I wish to goodness they had not given us so many medals etc: after ten weeks: [?] to wear four decorations is rather a large order & I am afraid makes us rather a laughing stock. I am [?] off to Lincolnshire to hunt till the end of March if possible - in the Summer if all possible I hope to come & look up my friends in the East & I hope I shall then have the pleasure of seeing [?]. I hardly ever go to a dance now - I like pretty women ....’
