Richard John Smart was born in Bexley, Kent on 24 May 1862. He enlisted into the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in July 1877 and progressed to a Petty Officer 2nd Class in June 1887. In early 1889 he transferred to the Coast Guard, in which he served until June 1919, attaining the rank of Chief Officer in November 1911. Sold with copied service details.
