Henry Edward Williams was born in Alverstoke, Gosport, Hampshire on 24 May 1852. He entered the Royal Navy in 1870 and was rated as an Able Seaman aboard the Sylvia in 1873. Serving on board the Monarch, he was promoted to Leading Seaman in January 1876 and Petty Officer 2nd Class in June 1877. Posted then to the Excellent he was promoted Petty Officer 1st Class in July 1878. He next served aboard the Boscawen, July 1878 - August 1883, after which he served on the Excellent, Inflexible and Invincible, August 1883 - September 1884. His next ship was the Monarch, October 1884 - April 1885, during which time he saw service with the Nile Flotilla (Medal and clasp). After a short period on the Orion, he was transferred to the Carysfort, June 1885 and in March 1887 attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer (Chief Gunner’s Mate). Further service followed aboard the Thalia, Cambridge, Excellent, Invincible and Australia, June 1887 - June 1893. Sold with copied service details.
