James Heslam Edmondson served in the ranks of the Commissariat and Transport Corps for 14 years 145 days, and as a Warrant Officer for 6 years 120 days. He was promoted Lieutenant and Quartermaster, 15 June 1885, for services on the Nile Expedition of 1884-85; Captain & Q.M., June 1895; Major & Q.M., November 1900. He served in South Africa during the Boer War, was mentioned in despatches by Lord Roberts, 4 September 1901, and granted the honorary rank of Major (Queen’s medal with clasp, King’s medal with two clasps). He retired in February 1901, and was appointed Lieut.-Colonel & Q.M. (Retired) in February 1903. He was recalled for war service 1914-18 and awarded the C.B.E. on 3 June 1919.
