William Henry Garde was born on 2 March 1842 and entered the Army as an Assistant Surgeon on the Staff on 31 March 1868., being transferred to the 21st Foot later the same year. Returning to the Staff in 1872, in 1880 he was appointed Surgeon Major. He served with the Army Medical Department in the Sudan expedition 1884-85. Appointed Surgeon Lieutenant-Colonel in October 1888, he was placed on Retired Pay the following month.
