Joseph Vavasour Lane was born in Dublin on 1 September 1836. He entered the Army as an Assistant Surgeon on the Staff on 13 October 1858. Appointed to the 2nd Battalion 4th Foot in 1859, he served with them in the Abyssinian expedition of 1867-68 and was appointed Surgeon in October 1868. He died on 4 April 1873.
