The Douglas & Isle of Man Bank was founded in 1815 by Henry Holmes (†1826) and his three sons, Henry (†1848), John (†1849) and James (†November 1853). The bank was a subsidiary of the Holmes’ general trading business, which encompassed fish curing, wines and spirits, shipping and property. After the death of the last partner the bank of Messrs Dumbell, Son, & Howard was established under the same title
