Plate XXIII. The subject matter of the medal is based on the Westphalian saga that the last battle against evil would be fought between the rivers Lippe and Rühr and that victory would be proclaimed at the birkenbaum, or birch tree, an allegory to the occupation of the land between the Lippe and Rühr by allied troops
