Zeppelins over Berlin, 1936, a cast bronze medal by K. Goëtz, the Graf Zeppelin and the Hindenburg dirigibles over the Brandenburg Gate, reverse soldier and saluting artisan, eagle and swastika on plinth behind, 114mm (K. 516; cf. Bonhams 12.ix.96, 97, for smaller size). Very fine and rare (£100-150)
Z 129, the Hindenburg, built in 1936, featured the very latest in dirigible technology. She measured 245 metres (804 ft) in length and had a top speed of 132kph (82mph). In May 1936 the Hindenburg inaugurated the first scheduled transatlantic air service between Frankfurt and Lakehurst, New Jersey. Tragically, Hindenburg was destroyed in a fireball while attempting to dock at Lakehurst on 6 May 1937
