Auction Catalogue
George III (1760-1820), Oval countermark on Spanish American Pillar Half-Real, 1748, Mexico. Host coin very worn, countermark fine or better (£50-60)
Illustration enlarged. The status of oval countermarks on all coins smaller than a Half-Dollar is dubious. The countermark in this case is not of particularly good style and appears to have been struck from a rusty punch, an interesting curiousily nonetheless.
