The Palace Cyclopia, 1896, a silver Executive Committee member’s lapel badge, back named (George Prescott, A.M.I.E.E.), 29mm; bronze Steward’s badge by Moore & Co, 33mm [2]. Very fine; latter with integral suspension loop and green ribbon (£30-40)

The Palace Cyclopia was a monster bazaar held in the grounds of the Royal Dublin Society from 19-23 May 1896, in aid of the Dublin National Eye and Ear Infirmary and the city’s St Mark’s Opthalmic Hospital. George Prescott is listed in contemporary directories at 9 Merrion row; his company, George Prescott & Sons, advertised themselves variously as opticians, electrical engineers and philosophical instrument makers. His premises also appear to have been something of a cultural crossroads, as it was also the registered address of the Stroller’s Club, the Dublin Sketching Club, the Instrumental Music Club and the Graphic Cruisers Club, Prescott being the honorary secretary of the last two
