Cambridge University, bronze award medals by Munsey (2), arms, rev. penny-farthing bicycle in wreath, one with edge named (C.U.B.C. 4 Mile Freshmens Race won by W.L. Raynes, Oct: 1887), the other with metal plaque inscribed (C.U.B.C. versus O.U.B.C., 4 Mile Race, 2nd, W.L. Raynes, Pemb: Coll:, 1888), both 51mm [2]. Virtually as struck, in original fitted cases of issue and an interesting numismatic recipient (£40-60)

First only illustrated on the Plates. William Luard Raynes, MA, OBE, descended from an old Cambridge family, inherited a small collection of coins formed by an ancestor between 1780 and 1820. His interest in coins began in the early 1880s and over time he built the collection up, principally with judicious purchases made in the salerooms in the inter-War years. The greater part of the collection was sold by Glendining’s in February 1950, although a further portion of gold coins was sold to Spink in 1962
