John Bruce was born in Glasgow and enlisted at Newcastle-on-Tyne. Serving with the 27th (Tyneside Irish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 9 April 1917, aged 22 years. He was buried in the Orchard Dump Cemetery, Arleux-en-Gohelle, Pas de Calais, France.
