Richard Ernest Hodges was born at Nether Broughton, Leics., on 2 February 1877, and joined the Royal Navy in February 1895. He served as a Stoker and achieved Petty Officer status in July 1906, becoming Mechanician in January 1910. He received his L.S. & G.C. medal in the following month and was promoted to Acting Warrant Mechanician in September 1914, and ended the war as a Warrant Mechanician.
