One of Barton’s Fusilier Brigade which comprised 2nd Royal Fusiliers (27 men), 2nd Royal Irish Fusiliers (20 men), 1st Royal Welch Fusiliers (1 officer and 25 men), and the 2nd Royal Scots Fusiliers (1 officer and 25 men).

George Haylock was born in the Parish of Sawston, Cambridgeshire, and was a milkman by trade before enlisting into the Royal Welsh Fusiliers at Wrexham on 10 July 1896, aged 20 years. He served during the occupation of Crete in 1897-98, and in the Boer War 1899-1902, with Barton’s Fusilier Brigade for the Relief of Mafeking, and subsequently at the Relief of Ladysmith. Promoted to Corporla in August 1902, and to Sergeant in May 1903, he was transferred to the Army Reserve later that year, and finally discharged on 9 July 1908. His service papers also mention the clasp for Wepener but this is not confirmed on the medal rolls.
