Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 3 clasps, Modder River, Orange Free State, Transvaal (1875 Serjt., A.O.C.), last clasp unofficially attached; King’s South Africa 1901-02, 2 clasps (1875 S. Serjt., A.O.C.) extremely fine (2) £120-160

M.I.D. London Gazette 10 September 1901. Recommendation states: ‘The best N.C.O. in the Army Ordnance Corps in the Orange River Colony. He has from the commencement of the campaign, without cessation, worked like a slave by day and night. By his example he has influenced all soldiers serving with him. I have always found him eminently straight forward and ? . He has done exceptional work. I beg to bring him specially to notice’.

William Denny was born in the Parish of St. Mary’s, Dover, Kent. A labourer by occupation, he enlisted into Ordnance Store Corps on 9 May 1882, aged 19 years, 1 month. He served abroad in Egypt, August 1884-October 1888 and South Africa, November 1899-February 1903. For his services he was awarded the Queen’s Medal with three clasps (confirmed) and King’s Medal with two and was mentioned in despatches. Sold with recipient’s original (fragile) service book and some copied research.
