A Great War Lloyd’s Medal for Meritorious Services group of three to Captain W. Manson, Merchant Navy

British War and Mercantile Marine Medals (William Manson); Lloyd’s Medal for Meritorious Services, 3rd type, silver (Captain William Manson, S.S. “Queensland”, 4th October 1918), in Wyon, London case of issue, extremely fine (3) £300-350

William Manson was born in Thurso in 1865 and passed as a Ship’s Master at South Shields in 1902. He was Master of the Regent from January 1903, the Terra from November 1905, the Gerent from July 1906, the Gladys Royle from March 1909 and the Britannia during 1912-16. Appointed Master of the George Allen in November 1916, the ship was in collision, 300 miles N.W. of Cape Finisterre on 11 June 1917. He was appointed Master of the defensively armed merchant ship Coalgas in February 1918. The ship was mined and sunk on 6 March 1918, 5 miles S. by W. of the Shipwash Light Vessel - no lives were lost. He was next re-appointed Master of the Gerent in August 1918. The ship was in collision with a vessel later that same month. Manson was then appointed to the command of the Queensland. He was awarded the Lloyd’s Medal for Meritorious Services on 19 February 1919, for his gallant conduct on the occasion of an encounter with an enemy submarine on 4 October 1918. In the London Gazette of 17 March 1919 he was commended for his services in connection with the war.
