Alan Douglas Drew was born on 4 April 1912 and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on the Unattached List on 1 September 1932. Appointed 1 2nd Lieutenant in the Indian Army in 1933, he was promoted Lieutenant in 1934 and Captain in 1940, serving as Acting Major, April-June 1941 and Temporary Major in July 1947.
