Tibet 1903-04, 1 clasp, Gyantse (3798 Pte. A. Patterson, Tel. Dept.) minor edge bruising, good very fine £300-400

The 3rd Hussars, based at Sialkot, India suppled three men for the Telegraph Department of the Tibet Mission 1903-04; 3798 Private Patterson was one of the three. On the role his initial is shown as an “A” which had been amended to “E” and he is listed as such in Military Telegraphists with the Tibet Mission 1903-04 by Alan Harfield appearing in O.M.R.S. Journal, Winter 1990. The roll also states that he was entitled to the medal without clasp. The roll further shows that for some reason the medal was never awarded to Patterson, possibly because at the time of issue, he and his unit had left India for South Africa. The medal, returned to the Army Medal Office, was never claimed by the recipient. In the 1920’s it was loaned by the Medal Office to the 3rd King’s Own Hussars Museum, at which time it probably gained the clasp for display purposes. At some later date it was disposed of by the museum. Sold with copied research.
