Waterloo 1815 (James Symons, 42nd Regiment of Foot), with integral loop and buckle-bar suspension, this latter engraved on the front, ‘Peninsula’, ‘Holland’ and ‘N. America’ and on the back ‘Copenhagen’ and ‘Egypt’, re-engraved naming but ‘Regiment Foot’ as originally impressed, edge bruising and contact marks, good fine £200-250

James Symons, who rose to the rank of Sergeant, served in Captain Daniel McIntosh’s Company in the Waterloo campaign. He had earlier seen service in the Peninsula, being awarded the Military General Service Medal 1793-1814 with clasps for “Corunna”, “Salamanca”, “Pyrenees”, “Nivelle”, “Nive”, “Orthes” and “Toulouse”, and was also the recipient of the 42nd Regiment’s Medal 1819 (see Balmer R336a).
