Joseph White was born in 1832, in Hendon, Kent, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in November 1850. He served aboard H.M.S. Atholl until August 1854, and was promoted Boy 1st Class in April 1853 and Ordinary Seaman a year later. He joined H.M.S. Lynx as an Able Seaman in August 1854 and saw action at Sebastopol and in the sea of Azoff. He was paid off to H.M.S. Fisgard in May 1857 and remained in the Navy reserve , receiving his L.S. & G.C. medal on 21 May 1873. (ADM/38/8481)

Azoff clasp confirmed, sent to Lynx on 13 May 1857, but the roll also states that a duplicate was issued on 15 September 1867.
