William Stimpson was born in the Parish of Barholm, near Stamford, Lincolnshire, and enlisted at Cork for the 16th Lancers on 19 January 1856, aged 22 years. He was discharged at Shorncliffe, at his own request on 10 May 1877, after 21 years service, including 11 years 195 days in India. His conduct was described as ‘very good’ and he was then in possession of ‘the silver medal with gratuity of £5 for Long Service and Good Conduct’. He was admitted an Out-Pensioner of Her Majesty’s Hospital at Chelsea on 29 May 1877, at the rate of 12d per day. He stated his intended place of residence as being Uffington, Lincolnshire.
