Samuel Robert Carroll was born on 27 August 1897, and was first commissioned on 16 October 1916. He was posted to the 80th Carnatic Infantry from November 1916, was promoted to Captain in July 1921, and served subsequently with the Training Battalion of the 83rd Wallajahbad Light Infantry.
