Arthur Peel was born on 12 February 1845 at Swinton Park, Manchester, son of William Mason Peel, an East India merchant of the firm Peel, Bellair & Company. He was educated at Wimbleton School and, having been nominated a cadet in the H.E.I.C., attended the Royal Indian Military College, Addiscombe, and was placed on the Bengal General List as an Ensign in June 1861. He was subsequently posted to the 101st Foot, with whom he served in the Umbeyla campaign, including the storming of the Conical Hill and the attack and capture of the Crag picquet. He was promoted to Lieutenant in October 1863, and transferred to the 7th Hussars, Queen’s troops, in October 1874. He remained with that regiment for the rest of his military career, becoming Colonel in December 1887. He held command of the regiment for two years, before moving onto the half-pay lists in December 1889. He was subsequently appointed Assistant Adjutant-General at Colchester for a period of five years and finally retired in January 1898. He died sometime in 1922, aged 77.
