Frank Abbott was first commissioned on 22 July 1868, promoted Lieutenant in October 1871, and by 1876 was a Squadron Officer in the 2nd Sind Horse. He served in the Afghan War of 1878-80 as Orderly Officer to Brigadier-General Nuttall in the advance on Kandahar and afterwards as Brigade Major to the Vitakri Field Force. He was promoted to Captain in July 1880 and was Squadron Commander of the 2nd Sind Horse until late 1885, when he transferred to the 6th Bombay Cavalry. Promoted to Major in July 1888, he transferred in 1892 to become Second-in-Command of the 7th Bombay Lancers, and was in command of that regiment from 1894 until his retirement in 1906 in the rank of Brigadier-General.
