Francis Munro Newberry was born in Guntoor, India, son of Edward Newberry, a Captain in the Madras Engineers. He joined the Indian Army in 1859 as an Ensign in the 58th Bengal Native Infantry but appears to have served briefly with the 8th Punjab Infantry in China in 1860. He was posted to the 24th N.I. in December 1861, becoming Adjutant of that Corps in 1865. Following promotion to Captain in 1867, Newberry shifted to the Indian Civil Service, serving the next twenty-five years as a civil judge and Assistant Commissioner in Lucknow and Oudh. He retained his military rank during this period and was finally promoted Brevet Colonel in March 1889, dying at Lucknow three years later in 1892.
