William Henry Hayes was born on 27 November 1833. He qualified as M.R.C.S. in 1855 and was appointed Assistant Surgeon on 4 August of the same year. He served during the Indian Mutiny, in the Kol rising, including operations in Chota Nagpur, and was wounded near Chaibasa on 14 January 1858. From 1860 until his retirement in 1878, he held a variety of civil positions in Bengal Commission, at Chota Nagpur, as Deputy Superintendant at Port Blair in the Andamans, and as Deputy Commissioner 2nd class at Singhboom. He was promoted to Surgeon-Major in 1876, retired on 16 April 1878, and died at Farnham, Surrey, on 8 September 1914.
